• Welcome! My name is Jory Mathews, and I am excited to be the 6th grade science teacher at River Forest Intermediate School! I was born in Brindisi, Italy, but my family is originally from Northwest Indiana. Both of my parents are River Forest graduates, and I graduated from Thomas Edison Jr/Sr High in Lake Station (yeah, yeah, yeah… I know). After high school, I attended Indiana University in Bloomington, where I received a degree in Elementary Education with a concentration on science education.

Having been born in Italy, I have always had an interest in different cultures and peoples. This interest inspired me to work with many different types of students in various school settings. I did my student teaching in a 5th grade classroom in Piñon, Arizona, in the heart of the Navajo Indian Reservation. Since then, I have worked in special education, was a classroom aide in a 2nd grade classroom, taught a year in a small, private school in a combined 3rd/4th grade classroom, and spent the last couple years as a 4th grade teacher at River Forest Elementary. I also spent two years living and working as an English teacher in Japan, teaching daily lessons to preschool students, private lessons with elementary school students, and professional development lessons with the Japanese preschool teachers. I believe having all of this teaching background allows me to bring great stories and experience into my classroom every day.

I am happy to be here and excited to work with your students! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me here at the school. The school phone number is 219-962-7716, or you can email me at jmathews@rfcsc.k12.in.us.
